Steps 1 to 3 begin immediately. Steps 4 to 6 typically follow within 24 to 48 hours for an expected death.

           1. Confirm the Death

At home: Call the person's GP or NHS 111. If the death was sudden or unexpected, call 999. A GP, paramedic or qualified professional will confirm it.

In hospital or a care home: Staff will confirm the death and guide you on what happens next.

           2. Contact White Rose Funerals, 24/7

Once the death has been confirmed, call us. We will talk you through what comes next, coordinate with hospital or care staff where needed, and arrange a respectful collection into our on-site Chapel of Rest. You do not need paperwork ready before you call. We will help you work out what is needed and when.

           3. Notify Family and Gather Information

Let close family know. Where possible, locate the following to help with registration: full name, date and place of birth, last address, NHS number, GP details, marriage or civil partnership details, and any available certificates. If some of these are missing, do not worry — we will advise you on what is essential.

           4. Medical Certificate of Cause of Death

For expected deaths, the GP or hospital's Medical Examiner prepares the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death and usually sends it directly to the local Registration Office. This typically takes one to two working days. Where the death is referred to the coroner, this step will pause. We will liaise with the relevant teams and keep you updated throughout.

           5. Book the Registrar Appointment

Once the Registration Office has received the medical certificate, you can book an appointment to register the death. Appointments are around 30 minutes and may be by phone or in person depending on the local authority. Certified copies of the death certificate can usually be ordered at the same appointment. We can help you arrange this and advise on what to bring. After registering, you will receive the reference needed for Tell Us Once.

           6. Early Choices and Provisional Scheduling

We will help you make the first decisions at a pace that feels right:

           Type of service and venue

            — a place of worship, crematorium chapel, or a natural setting

           Who will lead the service

            — a minister, civil celebrant, or a member of our team; you can learn more about working with a funeral celebrant in Leeds if you would like guidance on that choice

Provisional dates are shaped by venue availability, any coroner requirements, and how soon you want to bring people together. We coordinate all timings on your behalf.

           7. When the Coroner May Be Involved

The coroner is typically involved when a death was sudden, unexplained, or requires further clarification. This can affect timings for both registration and the funeral. We liaise directly with the coroner's office, keep you informed at each stage, and protect any provisional bookings so you are not left managing logistics on top of grief.

           8. Tell Us Once

Tell Us Once is a government service that lets you notify several departments in a single step, including HM Passport Office and the Department for Work and Pensions. You receive a reference after registering the death. We will explain how and when to use it.

           Scheduling a Funeral in Yorkshire

How do you schedule a funeral?

We begin with a short conversation to understand your wishes and any religious or cultural needs. We then contact your preferred venue or crematorium, your chosen officiant, and any third parties such as musicians or florists. We offer a shortlist of suitable dates and times, you choose what feels right, and we confirm everything in writing.

How long does arranging a funeral take?

Typically a few days to two weeks, depending on venue availability, paperwork, and whether the coroner is involved. Some families prefer additional time to gather people or plan personal elements, which can extend this naturally.

How far in advance are funerals booked?

Crematoria and places of worship generally release slots one to three weeks ahead, with some flexibility for earlier or later times. Weekday mornings tend to offer more availability. We will advise on local patterns and hold provisional slots while you decide.

Can you arrange a funeral in advance?

Yes. Many people choose to record their wishes informally or take out a prepaid plan. White Rose offers prepaid options administered by Golden Charter that let you set out preferences and fix our services at today's prices. You can read more about

The Medical Examiner usually sends the certificate to Leeds Registration Service before you can book. Appointments are often available within a few days.

Discussing one's own funeral may seem like an uncomfortable topic, but it is a practical and responsible approach to ensuring that your final wishes are met while reducing the financial burden on your loved ones. The heavy burden of organising and arranging the funeral of a loved one is something that many are concerned about passing on to their closest relatives so it’s important to start these conversations as early as possible to reduce any unneeded stress.

           Understanding Prepaid Funeral Plans

A prepaid funeral plan is a financial arrangement that allows individuals to pay for their funeral expenses in advance. The main purpose of these plans is to alleviate the financial and emotional stress placed on family members when arranging and paying for a funeral. This is typically done through a funeral director and these are available through most funeral homes, whether it’s an independent funeral director or a larger chain.

Here's how prepaid funeral plans typically work

Selection of Funeral Services: When you opt for a prepaid funeral plan, you'll work with a funeral director to select the specific services and merchandise you want for your funeral. This might include choices for the casket, burial or cremation, embalming, transportation, flowers, and more.

Financial Arrangement: Once you've made your choices, the funeral director will calculate the total cost of the services and merchandise. You'll then make a lump-sum payment or arrange a payment plan that suits your budget.

Fund Management: The funds you contribute are typically placed in a trust or an insurance policy. These funds are designed to grow over time, keeping pace with inflation to ensure they cover the future expenses of your funeral.

Locking in Prices: One significant benefit of prepaid funeral plans is that they lock in the costs at the time you make the arrangements. This can help protect your family from rising funeral expenses over the years.

Funeral Planning Booklet: You'll receive a funeral planning booklet or contract outlining all the details of your chosen services and how the funds will be used. This contract serves as a legally binding agreement.

Advantages of Prepaid Funeral Plans

Financial Security: Prepaid funeral plans provide financial security for your end-of-life expenses. Your loved ones won't need to worry about covering the costs when the time comes.

Less Burden on Loved Ones: By making your own funeral arrangements and covering the costs, you reduce the emotional and financial burden on your family during an already difficult time.

Peace of Mind: Knowing that everything is taken care of according to your wishes can provide peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy your later years without concerns about your final arrangements.

Prepaid funeral plans are a responsible way to take control of your final arrangements while easing the financial and emotional burden on your loved ones. By understanding how these plans work and selecting one that suits your needs, you can ensure that your end-of-life wishes are respected, and your family is spared the stress of handling your funeral expenses. While it may seem like a difficult topic to broach, planning for your own funeral is a thoughtful and considerate act that can provide you and your family with peace of mind.

are becoming increasingly popular for a variety of reasons and there are many different options to consider. From direct cremations to direct burials, more freedom has allowed funerals to be less of a money worry and a preferred option even by some who could afford a more extravagant service. The relief of not adding a costly bill to loved one’s concerns is of great appeal as is simply having a bit more to spend to enjoy yourself if you agree to a prepaid funeral plan.

In this article, we'll explore the benefits of low cost funerals and why they may be the right choice for your loved one's farewell. There has often been a taboo placed on budget or low cost funerals with some viewing them as disrespectful but this is thankfully an old-fashioned way of thinking about a funeral. A funeral should always be about remembering your loved one in the most personal and suitable manner possible and that can be more than achieved with a simpler service.

Affordability

Perhaps the most obvious benefit of a low cost funeral is the affordability factor. Traditional funerals can be incredibly expensive, with costs ranging from several thousand pounds to tens of thousands of pounds and this price point shows no signs of lowering as everything is currently on the rise. By opting for a low cost funeral, you can save a significant amount of money while still honouring your loved one's memory. This is also true of pre-paid plans as having that little bit extra in the pot for a holiday or trip out can make all the difference and help make lasting memories.

Environmental Sustainability

Another benefit of low cost funerals is the environmental sustainability factor. The environment is obviously of key concern to many families and reducing the environmental impact of a funeral is something many want to look into. Traditional burials often involve the use of toxic embalming chemicals and non-biodegradable caskets that can harm the environment. These methods are often quite expensive as well as the larger coffins and urns usually used in proceedings. Low cost funerals, on the other hand, often involve simple and

options that have a minimal impact on the environment. Also, biodegradable urns and coffins are often a lot cheaper than traditional wooden coffins or urns so you can save money while benefiting the environment.

Flexibility

Low cost funerals also offer a greater degree of flexibility than traditional funerals. For example, direct cremation or home funerals can be arranged quickly and easily, allowing for a more personalised and meaningful goodbye. Additionally, low cost funerals often allow for greater customization and creativity in planning the farewell, such as using personal items or mementos as decorations.

Emotional Comfort

Planning a low cost funeral can also offer emotional comfort to those who are grieving. By focusing on simplicity and meaningfulness, low cost funerals can help alleviate the stress and anxiety that can come with planning a traditional funeral. Additionally, low cost funerals often allow for a more intimate and personal farewell, which can be especially comforting during a time of grief.

Financial Security

Finally, choosing a low cost funeral can provide financial security for both you and your loved ones. By avoiding the high costs associated with traditional funerals, you can ensure that your finances are protected and that your loved ones are not burdened with excessive expenses after your passing.

In conclusion, low cost funerals offer a variety of benefits beyond just saving money. From environmental sustainability to emotional comfort to financial security, there are many reasons to consider a low cost funeral for your loved one's farewell. By focusing on simplicity and meaningfulness, you can create a personalised and memorable farewell that honours your loved one's memory in the best possible way.

have been a major part of funeral traditions in the UK for hundreds of years and therefore, many different flowers have been used over the years. This means that funeral flowers have deep symbolic meanings, often offering messages of sympathy, love, and remembrance. It's important to choose flowers that reflect the personality and spirit of the departed, while also providing comfort to the bereaved.

Below is a list of some commonly chosen funeral flowers and their symbolic meanings in relation to memorial:

             Lilies

: Often seen as a symbol of purity and innocence, lilies are a popular choice for funerals. They represent the restored innocence of the soul of the deceased.

             Roses

: With their timeless beauty, roses convey both love and sorrow. Red roses are often associated with deep affection, while white roses symbolise purity and peace. Yellow roses are also a sign of friendship and are a popular choice with those that are not directly related to the deceased.

             Carnations

: Carnations are known for their long-lasting nature and this makes them ideal for remembrance. They are also typically quite bold in colour allowing to convey love, admiration, and remembrance. They are fragrant and long-lasting flowers, making them ideal for services that last for several days. Similar to that of lilies, white carnations are used as a symbol of purity. Pink carnations send thoughts of remembrance.

             Chrysanthemums

: These flowers are widely used in funeral arrangements and represent loyalty and deep love. In many cultures, chrysanthemums are specifically associated with mourning and are considered an appropriate choice for funerals. They are particularly popular in the United States.

             Orchids

: Exotic and elegant, orchids represent strength and beauty. They symbolise eternal love and are often used to show sympathy and support. While all colours respresent a similar message of everlasting love, it is often recommended that you choose white or pink varieties to show your sympathy and compassion with the bereaved family.

Consider the Deceased's Personality and Interests

To personalise the floral arrangements, consider the deceased's personality and interests. Were they a vibrant and energetic person? Opt for bright and colourful flowers to celebrate their life. If they had a favourite flower or colour, incorporating it into the arrangements can be a beautiful tribute. For those who have a passion for nature, incorporating elements like branches, leaves, or even potted plants can add a touch of natural beauty to the funeral arrangements. This will often be reflected in the ceremony so try and match what the ceremony suggests. For example, a more traditional ceremony often calls for roses or lilies but carnations or chrysanthemums can be quite popular for celebration of life memorials.

Take into Account Cultural and Religious Customs

Every culture and religion has its own customs and traditions surrounding funerals and flowers. It's important to be mindful of these customs and choose flowers that are appropriate within their beliefs.

For example, in some traditions, it may be customary to avoid certain colours or flowers, while in others, specific flowers may hold deeper religious or cultural significance. Consulting with family members can help ensure that your choice of flowers respects the deceased's cultural or religious customs, particularly if it’s a culture you are not familiar with. Any cultural or specific requests are often reflected in the invitation but it’s best to make sure by checking with someone first.

Choosing the Right Floral Arrangements

Funeral floral arrangements can be diverse, and it's important to choose ones that will honour and celebrate the life of your loved one. Here are a few popular options to consider:

             Casket sprays

: These large, formal arrangements are placed on top of the casket and often serve as the centrepiece of the funeral service.

            Standing sprays

: These vertical arrangements are displayed on an easel and are typically placed near the casket during the viewing or service.

            Wreaths

: Wreaths can be placed on the door or at the funeral service. They are often shaped like a circle, symbolising the eternal cycle of life.

            Bouquets

: Smaller bouquets are a touching gesture to show sympathy and support. They can be placed near the casket or at a memorial site.

Expressing Your Condolences through Flowers

In addition to choosing the right flowers and arrangements, you may want to consider adding a thoughtful message or card to accompany your gift. Words of sympathy and encouragement can bring comfort to those grieving. It’s best to keep your message short and sweet to allow the family and loved ones to read your messages of support but cards with longer messages often accompany memorial flowers.

The loss of a child is an unspeakable burden that no parent should ever have to endure. The initial shock and disbelief can leave parents feeling numb, as if the world has come crashing down upon them. It is important to recognise that grief is a personal and unique journey, and each parent will experience it in their own way and at their own pace.

Embracing Support and the Complexity of Grief

Grief is a multifaceted emotion, and the loss of a child brings forth a unique set of challenges. Parents may find themselves oscillating between overwhelming sadness, anger, guilt, and even moments of acceptance. It is essential to acknowledge and honour the full range of emotions that emerge during the grieving process, understanding that they are a natural part of the healing journey.

During this harrowing time, seeking support from loved ones, friends, or support groups can provide a lifeline of comfort and understanding. Connecting with others who have experienced a similar loss can create a safe space for sharing stories, expressing emotions, and finding solace in the company of those who truly comprehend the depth of the pain.

           Honouring the Memory

Keeping the memory of the child alive is an integral part of the healing process. Parents can create meaningful rituals, such as establishing a memorial, writing letters, or creating a remembrance garden, to honour their child's life and legacy. Celebrating milestones and anniversaries can provide opportunities for reflection and healing, allowing parents to connect with their child's spirit and find solace in their memory.

In the midst of grief, it is vital for parents to practise self-compassion. This means allowing yourself to grieve without judgement, recognising that healing takes time, and prioritising self-care. Engaging in activities that bring comfort, seeking professional counselling if needed, and practising self-compassion through mindfulness and self-reflection can help parents navigate the turbulent waters of grief.

           Embracing the Light Amidst Darkness

Though it may seem impossible to fathom, healing and hope can emerge from the darkest corners of grief. As parents gradually navigate their grief journey, they may discover a renewed sense of purpose and find solace in helping others who have experienced similar losses. Establishing or joining groups that support bereaved parents, participating in advocacy work, or engaging in creative outlets can offer a sense of empowerment and contribute to the healing process.

Grief is not linear, nor does it adhere to a timetable. Parents may experience unexpected waves of sorrow even years after their child's passing. It is crucial to acknowledge and accept these emotions as they arise, granting oneself permission to grieve and seeking support when needed. Healing does not imply forgetting, but rather embracing the pain as part of the intricate tapestry of love and loss.

Grieving for the loss of a child is an arduous journey, one that tests the limits of human strength and resilience. As parents navigate this agonising path, it is important to approach the process with compassion, both for oneself and others who have endured similar experiences. Together, by acknowledging the weight of the loss, seeking support, honouring memories, and nurturing self-compassion, parents can begin to find solace amidst the pain and gradually rebuild their lives, carrying the eternal love for their child in their hearts.

Cremation has long been a popular option for funerals and with the recent rise in

           direct cremations

, cremations are more common than ever before. While some prefer the finality of a cremation for both spiritual and personal reasons, many also take comfort in the act of burial as a permanent way of remembering the loved one; the tombstone and grave acting as a spot to visit and take flowers for remembrance.

When it comes to memorialising a loved one after a cremation, many people choose to keep their ashes in an urn. This is quite a nice way of keeping the loved one within reach and provides a reassurance to many that the loved one is still with them even as they pass on. However, there are many alternative options for storing and displaying cremated remains and when talking with people who have recently lost a loved one, many are unaware of the many options that are available to them.

As with the whole grieving process, remembrance doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all solution for all and while many take comfort in the traditional urn, it is important to be aware of the various options that you can pursue for your loved one’s remains to provide the most suitable option. These alternatives can be more personal, unique, and creative than traditional urns, and can provide a lasting tribute to a loved one's life.
For those who wish to have a more environmentally-friendly approach, biodegradable urns are a great option. Funerals and burial processes have more routinely been put under scrutiny for their environmental impact and while we work towards

, a biodegradable urn has become a popular option. These urns are made from materials such as recycled paper, plant fibres, or even salt, and are designed to decompose naturally over time. This can be a beautiful way to return your loved one to nature and help the planet at the same time.

Another popular alternative to urns is to have a small amount of ashes placed inside a piece of jewellery, such as a pendant or bracelet. This allows you to keep your loved one close to your heart and carry their memory with you wherever you go. Keepsake Jewellery did used to be quite expensive and limited in terms of your options and where you could get them from but with increased demand, lovely keepsake jewellery can be found for low cost and in a variety of styles.

Memorial glass is a beautiful way to honour your loved one's memory. This is created by mixing a small amount of cremated remains with melted glass, which can then be shaped into a variety of different objects, such as vases, paperweights, or jewellery. Memorial glass can be an especially meaningful way to commemorate a loved one who had a special connection to glass art or who loved the beauty of glasswork. If you are considering memorial glass, I’d recommend doing thorough research and finding a reliable provider as this can be a costly memorial option and quality can vary greatly.

As we continue to move towards greener practices, living memorials are becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional urns. This involves using the ashes to plant a tree, flowers, or other living plants in honour of your loved one. This can provide a beautiful and meaningful way to remember them while also contributing to the environment and creating a lasting legacy.

For those who want to create a unique and personal tribute to their loved one, artwork can be a great option. This can include creating a painting, sculpture, or other art piece that incorporates the ashes in some way. This can be a beautiful way to celebrate your loved one's life and remember their unique personality and interests.

Finally, scattering the ashes is another popular alternative to urns. This can be done in a variety of settings, such as a favourite hiking trail, the beach, or a meaningful location. Scattering the ashes can be a beautiful way to return your loved one to nature and provide a sense of closure and peace.

In conclusion, there are many alternatives to urns that can provide a beautiful and meaningful way to honour your loved one's memory. From artwork to memorial glass, keepsake jewellery and living memorials, there are many options to choose from. Consider your loved one's personality, interests, and wishes when deciding whether an alternative to urns is right for you, and remember that there is no right or wrong way to honour someone's memory. planning a funeral

can be a difficult and overwhelming task. And for those on a tight budget, it can be especially challenging to navigate the costs associated with funerals. However, it's important to remember that there are ways to plan a meaningful funeral without breaking the bank.

In the current economic climate, it has become increasingly necessary to find ways to make the funeral service cheaper and while it is never a particularly easy decision to have, a low cost service can still be a more than fitting memorial even if it’s not everything you might have wished.

If you are looking to reduce the financial burden of a funeral, here are a few things you might want to consider in order to get the best possible bang for your buck.

Shop Around for Funeral Homes

One of the first steps in planning a low-cost funeral is to shop around for funeral homes. Funeral costs can vary significantly, so it's important to compare prices and services from different providers. Don't be afraid to ask for a price list, and consider a funeral home that offers package deals or discounts.

Choose Direct Cremation

Direct cremations are quickly becoming a popular option in the UK with 18% of funerals in 2022 featuring no traditional service.

           Direct cremation

is a simple and low-cost option that eliminates many of the expenses associated with traditional funerals. With direct cremation, the body is cremated immediately after death, without a funeral service or viewing. This can help you save thousands of pounds on funeral expenses, and allows for more flexibility in planning a memorial service or scattering of ashes.

It is important to mention that some people can struggle with the lack of a final ceremony to pay remembrance and direct cremations are often seen as bad for grief. However, there is often an over-inflation in regards to the impact on grief and in recent research, there has been limited to no link found between a direct funeral service and severity of grief. It is still the case though that many can struggle with the lack of a final goodbye and it is important to have open discussions with loved ones and family members to get everyone’s view to avoid any further pain or shock.

Opt for Simple Caskets or Urns

           Caskets and urns

can be one of the most expensive aspects of a traditional funeral. However, there are many affordable options available. Consider a simple casket or urn, or even a DIY option such as a handmade urn or a biodegradable casket. Most funeral homes will now offer a variety of budget options and many prefer biodegradable caskets and urns anyway to reduce impact on the environment.

Limit Flowers and Decorations

While flowers and decorations can be a beautiful tribute to a loved one, they can also add up quickly in terms of cost. Consider limiting the number of flowers or choosing more affordable options, such as wildflowers or potted plants. You can also use personal items or mementos as decorations, such as photos, candles, or favourite belongings of the deceased. A particularly nice tribute is often something closely related to the loved one and it can be an even more powerful way to say goodbye.

Get a Pre-Paid Funeral Plan

Planning ahead can also help to reduce funeral costs. Consider purchasing a prepaid funeral plan or funeral insurance to help cover the costs of the funeral. By planning ahead, you can also ensure that your wishes are respected and that your loved ones are spared from making difficult decisions during a time of grief. With funeral prices, like everything, on the rise, locking in the price of a funeral is the best way to reduce the cost as funerals are unfortunately likely only going to increase in price in the future. There are a wide variety of

In conclusion, planning a low-cost funeral that still honours the departed and their memory is possible with some research, creativity, and flexibility. It can still be difficult, especially in the current market, and you may need to cut some things you might find particularly hard. Shopping around for funeral homes, choosing direct cremation or a direct burial, opting for simple caskets or urns, limiting flowers and decorations, and planning ahead are all ways to reduce funeral costs without sacrificing the meaningful goodbye that your loved one deserves. Remember that every funeral is unique and personal, and there is no right or wrong way to say goodbye.

Cremation has become the most popular form of service after death. According to statistics released by YouGov, nearly six in ten people (58%) want to be cremated after death. There are many reasons for this such as general cost and giving the loved ones left behind more flexibility and freedom.

So, with the majority of people wishing for cremation after death, we thought it would be useful to explore the different types of cremation services and what they include as there are a few options to choose from.

When it comes to arranging a cremation service, there are three main types to choose from:

            A direct cremation

Let’s take a look at what each of these cremation types include.

Traditional funeral service followed by a cremation

This is quite a popular option. It keeps the typical traditions of a burial funeral but without the actual burial. A traditional funeral service, for those unfamiliar, is where a ceremony is held for the deceased with friends and family invited to attend, there is typically a hymn and a few songs and it is usually held in a chapel or a crematorium.

After the traditional funeral service has been completed, the body will then be transported to a crematory and the cremation process will begin. The cremated remains (ashes) are then delivered to the family, usually in the form of an urn chosen by the family of the deceased or the deceased themselves before their passing.

While the traditional funeral service can be a great send-off, it can add a hefty cost as well as requiring a lot of planning, which can often be a huge deterrent. Though, this can be off-set somewhat by a funeral plan where the deceased lays out their desires before their passing. However, this added cost and stress is why people are drawn towards a direct cremation.

Direct cremation

           Direct cremations

are the simplest form of cremation. No real planning is needed, and it’s all handled by your chosen direct cremation provider. There is no service and no attendees with a direct cremation, which provides the freedom to hold a positive and more personal send-off at a later date.

This lack of planning is matched with a cheaper fee overall, saving you thousands over a traditional funeral service. There is also the benefit of not having to plan out the service and worry about contacting family and friends who can’t make the date. In a time of death and grieving, you want to focus on the more important things in life, such as supporting your family, and appreciating the memories you’ve had with your loved ones. A direct cremation allows you to set aside the service or wake for a later date at your convenience which is greatly appealing.

Memorial service

A memorial service is essentially a funeral service without the deceased present. Usually, the cremation takes place first and then the memorial takes place afterwards. This can be weeks, or even months after the death. It’s a sort of best of both worlds between a direct cremation and one with a service. The cost is still high due to the service but it gives you the freedom to decide when you want the service and gives you a chance to mourn and grieve with loved ones before planning the service.

No matter what option you choose, remember to be there for each other during this difficult time and spend time remembering the good times spent together rather than worrying about the proceedings. Please know that the

There has been recent discussion in the press surrounding greener and more environmentally friendly options for funerals. The funeral industry has been making continued efforts to make their processes more environmentally safe and to reduce the impact burial and cremation has on the environment.

sees calls for newer and more green alternatives to be implemented. The article discusses the problems with cremation using a lot of fuel as well as the continued scarcity of usable burial sites. The article mentions a few greener funeral alternatives that are becoming more popular throughout the world but many of the burial services discussed are not currently available in the UK.

This is why we thought it might be useful to go through some of the ways you might be available to have a ‘greener’ funeral in the UK currently. It's important to note that green funeral options may not be available in all areas or may require additional planning and research. It's also important to consult with funeral professionals and loved ones to ensure that the wishes of the deceased are respected and that the funeral meets the needs of the family and community.

What are green funerals?

Green funerals, also known as eco-friendly funerals or natural burials, are an environmentally conscious alternative to traditional funerals that often involve embalming, metal caskets, and concrete burial vaults. Here are some green funeral options:

Natural Burial: In a natural burial, the body is not embalmed, and is instead placed in a biodegradable casket or shroud and buried in a natural setting. This allows the body to decompose naturally and return to the earth. These are becoming a more popular option as these are not only environmentally conscious but also can be considerably cheaper. There are hundreds of registered sites where natural burials are permitted in the UK (217 at time of writing).

Greener Cremations: While cremation uses energy and produces carbon emissions, it can be a more eco-friendly option than traditional burial if done in a way that minimises its environmental impact. Some crematories use cleaner burning fuels, and there are options for biodegradable urns or scattering the ashes in a natural setting. This provides minimal long term impact to the environment and biodegradable urns are remarkably popular in the UK.

Green Caskets: Green caskets are made from sustainable, biodegradable materials such as bamboo, willow, or cardboard, and can be used for both burial and cremation. These types of coffins have been available for use in the UK for a number of years. They are typically more expensive than wood effect coffins and depending on the material, the price point can be considerably high.

Home Funerals: Home funerals involve caring for the body of the deceased at home, without the use of embalming chemicals. Family and friends can participate in washing, dressing, and preparing the body for burial or cremation. This can be a meaningful and eco-friendly alternative to traditional funerals.

Green solutions for funerals are becoming more and more popular and necessary as people become more concerned about our impact on the environment as well as naturally diminishing resources over time. Over the next couple of years, green alternatives will likely continue to come out and the more traditional burial and cremations might start to decline in popularity.

A funeral is an incredibly tough time but also one that can be used to celebrate and honour the life of the deceased with a touching and personal tribute. This can come in many different ways but one of the most poignant is the song choices during the ceremony. Music plays a key part to many funerals and celebrations of life and is something that can be used to spark memories and honour the life of the departed.

Historically, the use of music in funeral services was very sombre and often took place in the form of a hymn. Requiems, songs discussing mourning and death, were also fairly typical. By and large, music was heavily restricted in the funeral service but times have changed and music now has a larger role to play in most services. Typically, the funeral service will have a song to walk into, a song for remembrance and a song for exiting the building. During some services, there may also be a featured hymn but this is not always the case and less common than it was traditionally.
It is often the case that the deceased will have chosen their music before their passing but this is not always possible and it may fall on the family to decide what music is appropriate and best represents their loved one. There are many options to choose from and you can very easily get lost and stressed about the decision on top of everything else that is going on at that moment. Therefore, we wanted to offer some popular ideas and suggestions to make the choice as easy as possible.
What is often a popular music choice is a song that is iconic to the individual. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean their favourite pop song but it could also mean an iconic song from their favourite movie or a song that symbolises their local town or sports team. This allows those in attendance to better remember the deceased and can be a really touching way of paying tribute. Some iconic and popular options are below :

Services now come in all shapes and sizes and this is reflected in the different tones funerals can have. While all services aim to be respectful and touching tributes to the life of the deceased, some funerals can be more positive and uplifting while others choose to be poignant and emotional. Taking this in account allows you to honour the departed in your own way and match the service with appropriate music.

Pre-recorded or live performance?

Another thing to consider is whether you would like pre-recorded music or live music. Modern funerals typically use pre-recorded music as it is more convenient and it offers you a wider selection of choice but you can organise a singer if you feel it is appropriate. Some people may have a singer in mind who they would want to perform at the ceremony. Sometimes this can be a friend of the family which is a sweet, sentimental touch as it makes the service even more personal. Another option is to hire a live musician. There are many musicians that offer this service if you would rather do a live performance and many people prefer this as it offers a more traditional touch. In most venues, an organ is provided for those who would like to use it.

            Give it some time.

There is no hurry to decide quickly. It's crucial that you obtain the music you deem ideal, even if it takes some time.

Choose the order and number of songs.

In most services, 3-5 songs are played. Consider the songs you wish to hear first and last. Choosing their favourite song as the final song is the ideal send-off because typically the last song is the one that people will remember. Additionally, think about whether you want any music played during any speeches or tributes. Sometimes people prefer background instrumental music that is played gently.

Make sure the music captures the individual.

The song is intended to pay tribute to your loved one. You must also take into account the fact that these songs will almost certainly serve as reminders of that person in the future. Make sure they could relate to the song. Choosing music they loved would make everyone feel closer to them because listening to music while reflecting is the ideal time to do so.

Make a careful review of the song choices.

Make sure to hear ALL of the lyrics before making a decision. Sometimes, things might not mean what you thought they meant or what you recall meaning.

Try to learn what music they would prefer to hear.

Naturally, it might not always be possible to determine the exact song that someone wants played at their burial. The majority of individuals do not enjoy discussing it, however some are rather receptive to doing so.

Each venue will have its own set of guidelines, so get in touch with them as soon as you can. It is advisable to always double-check in advance because many churches now permit a combination of religious and nonreligious music and readings.

Funerals are an incredibly personal and difficult time but they are also a chance to remember and honour a loved one as well as share stories with those closest to you. They are a chance to say goodbye but remember to embrace those around you and listen to their input. Songs are a great way to celebrate the uniqueness of your loved one and honour their memory with a personal song.

           Remembering loved ones at Christmas

The holiday season is supposed to be a time of joy, but for those who are grieving, it can be a difficult time, particularly for those spending their first Christmas alone. The holidays can be a reminder of what has been lost, and can bring up intense emotions. It is important to allow yourself to grieve during this time, and to find ways to cope with that work for you.

While there is no easy way to deal with your grief, you can work through it, bit by bit. Here are some ideas for coping with grief at Christmas:

• Acknowledge your pain.

Don’t try to stuff your grief. It’s okay to cry and to feel sadness and pain over the loss of someone close. Facing that pain and hardship will allow you to work through it easier and while it won’t be a pleasurable experience, it is a necessary one.

• Talk about your loved one.

Don’t be afraid to mention their name and to share stories about them. This can be a healing way to keep their memory alive. Try and keep those old traditions alive if you can. It might be a favourite movie, song or even something like a favourite ornament but share what was special to that person. It might just help to remove a little bit of that sense of dread and emptiness felt by their absence.

• Find a supportive community.

There are often grief support groups available during the holidays. This can be a place to share your feelings and to listen to others who are going through similar experiences. Even if it’s not a support group, find people to talk to outside of your family and close friends if possible. It will allow you to gain new perspectives and discuss stories and memories with those not closely associated.

• Do something to honour your loved one.

This could be something as simple as lighting a candle in their memory or putting up a special decoration in their honour. A special wreath over a grave is quite a popular and personal touch but perhaps taking a favourite ornament up to be with them can be a great way to keep their memories alive and share something intimate and meaningful to you.

• Seek professional help if needed.

A sad truth is that most of us will go through a similar experience over the years but a positive side to that is that there is a lot of wonderful support available. You are not alone and you don’t have to deal with this alone. If you are finding it difficult to cope with your grief, don’t be afraid to seek out professional help. This can be an invaluable way to get support and to begin healing.

Grief can be particularly difficult at Christmas and there is no easy way to deal with the pain felt during this time. However, this is a totally normal and natural process and you are not alone. You will get through this. If you are ever in need of support or just an ear to listen, please do not hesitate to call us anytime on 01226 888178. We can lend an ear, offer our support as well as recommend people to talk to if you need support over the festive season.

How To Write A Eulogy

Writing a eulogy is a profound way to honour a loved one. Learn how to structure your speech, gather meaningful memories, and deliver a heartfelt tribute with confidence.

Writing a personal and compassionate goodbye...

Giving a eulogy may be one of the toughest and difficult experiences of your life, expressing your love and admiration for the departed while also having to handle the weight of that final goodbye and your own grieving in the process. It is a herculean effort and one that if you have accomplished, you should feel incredibly proud.

Not every funeral will have a eulogy as understandably many prefer to simply give those honours over to the more experienced funeral officiant who will handle the duty of putting together a fitting tribute with stories and little tidbits they receive during their talks with the loved ones and family of the deceased.

However, there may be a time when you are asked to give a eulogy for your loved one. As mentioned, this is a job with an incredible amount of pressure behind it but it is also an opportunity to say goodbye in your own words and offer comfort and a chance for remembrance to those closest to you. Below are a list of items that will help to make this speech as easy as possible.

1. Decide on the Tone

As with most funerals today, a great deal of the ceremony is decided by the tone. While traditional funerals were sombre affairs, many modern services take an opportunity to remember the departed in a more relaxed manner, celebrating their life. The tone of your eulogy should aim to match what surrounds it; the speech should be respectful, but it doesn’t always have to be completely sombre. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the person’s death, you may feel that you can write a lighter eulogy or include some humour. Ideally, your speech should be made to align with the deceased and be a respectful representation of their life and your relationship.

2. Introduce Yourself

It is unlikely you know everyone at the funeral so some people attending the funeral may not know you, so it’s wise to give some context of your relationship with the deceased. Explain how you were related or how you met them. You should also thank the audience for attending the service and, if not a member of the family, offer your condolences.

3. Give Key Points About the Deceased

Once you have given the introduction, you can go on to talk about the deceased but it can often be difficult to know what to discuss. The key is to not overthink it or feel that you need to cover everything. Cover the key things and focus on a few key details, particularly ones that left a strong impression. This might include mentioning these below but please don’t view it as a complete checklist, simply talk about what you wish :

Major events from their life

Their relationships with their family and friends

            Their achievements (professional and otherwise)

The things and ideas they cared about most

If you feel you need to mention negative things in the person’s life, such as battles with cancer or dementia, be tactful. Talk about their difficulties with compassion, and don’t say anything that would shock, offend or confuse the audience. Tackle things with grace and if you need to mention something, it should be well-known as to not offend or upset those in attendance.

5. Close the Eulogy

To end the eulogy, offer some words of comfort and say goodbye to the deceased. You may wish to finish on a quotation – either something the deceased used to say or a quote that is relevant to their life though, don't feel the need to force it. Keep it natural and representative of the deceased. Ending on a simple message of goodbye can be effective and particularly profound.

6. Get the Timing Right

Aim to write a eulogy that is between three and five minutes long. You want it to be long enough that you can go into detail about the deceased, but you want to avoid going into too much detail. A longer speech will also be more difficult for you personally and keeping it brief will often be somewhat of a comfort. If you are unsure how long to make it, ask the person organising the service how much time you will have available to speak.

7. Ask for Feedback

Once you have written a first draft of the eulogy, it may be useful to get feedback from family and friends who knew the deceased. You can then edit it as necessary and practise reading it out loud. It’ll also help you spot key details you may have missed and relieve some of that pressure and stress. You are not alone and you should never feel like that throughout the entire grieving process.

8. If you aren’t comfortable with it, say no

Funerals are difficult and people react to grief and remembrance in different and completely natural ways. Even if you are a typically extroverted and friendly person, you may find yourself unable to talk about the departed and find yourself unfitting for such a position. This is totally normal and understandable, simply excuse yourself in a respectful manner and don’t feel the need to stress or agganise over a eulogy when the funeral will be difficult enough.

Funerals are an incredibly personal and difficult time but they are also a chance to remember and honour a loved one as well as share stories with those closest to you. They are a chance to say goodbye but remember to embrace those around you and listen to their input. Remember the loved one at all times and what they would want but don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If the weight is too much, express this with the

At White Rose, we are always amazed and quite proud to see how much traditions have changed over the years in regards to funerals. There are so many

           unique and special traditions

associated with funerals even just in our beloved Yorkshire and it speaks to the personal and difficult nature of saying goodbye that there can be so many slightly different funerals happening. One place where traditions have certainly changed is in the art of the offering people give to show their condolences to the family of the deceased.

In the past, the typical donation at a funeral would have been flowers, a tradition that has its origins in prehistoric times and one that is the most common image people think of when picturing a funeral. A casket lovingly adorned with flowers from dear friends and relatives is one of the most powerful and symbolic images associated with traditional UK funerals. This is still an important and popular way of honouring the dead and sending your best wishes to the bereaved.

However, also increasing in popularity and relevance is the charitable donation. This often is in the form of a donation to a cause that was close to the deceased and is done for a number of different reasons. For a large funeral, it can be done to limit the number of flowers donated. It could also be done to offer freedom of choice to those attending and remove the need to choose and organise a flower donation. In an age where charitable causes are high, many just believe in doing a bit of good and a funeral donation is a symbolic way of doing it.

Of course, general etiquette should be taken into account as well as the deceased’s wishes when deciding what to donate at a funeral so here’s a couple of things to bear in mind when making a donation. These are mostly common sense as there isn’t really a wrong answer as long as you are following the advice and requests of the deceased’s family. Showcasing your support means far more than any donation could.

If donating flowers, choosing the right flowers is important but shouldn’t be seen as a source of panic and stress. At the end of the day, it is the thought that counts and as long as it isn’t ridiculous, it is hard to go wrong. It helps to be in contact with those arranging the funeral as that will help with general colour and arrangement choices. Also, you’ll need to know when the funeral is taking place and who you need to notify whether that be the family of the deceased or the funeral director so having early contact is helpful.

When picking flowers, it helps to think of the deceased. What was their preference? Did they have any particular favourites that stand out? What was their personality like? How did they like to dress or present themselves? This will help with choosing the colours as well as knowing how extravagant a display you should use. Bear in mind that the more intricate and larger displays will demand an earlier ordering time and this is something that you need to be aware of.

If you decide to donate to a charity, there will usually be one or two recommendations from the family. It’s best to donate early so that the donation can be processed and the family can arrange thank you notes to donors. If you aren’t given a charity to donate to, it’s best to choose one that relates to the family but this is a rare occurrence as the donations are often handled by a funeral director who usually requires a chosen charity.

In terms of how to donate, you can often donate on the day through a collection plate but most of the time, it is best to send the money to the funeral director or responsible family member to allow them to sort the donation and keep all money together. It is also common these days to have a link to a donation page and some major charities provide opportunities for memorial pages. Money can also be collected through donation services such as justgiving or gofundme and then passed onto the relevant charities, these allow for a more personal touch and better access for all relatives and friends. These links can often be found on the back of the Order of Ceremony for the funeral as well as any other instructions on how to donate. If you are wondering what donation you should make, common protocol is to donate what you would have paid for flowers if not a bit more.

When deciding what to do, just remember the support you offer the bereaved will be the main thing that is appreciated, whether that is in the form of a charitable donation or a floral arrangement. The loss of a loved one can be very difficult and donations and floral tributes cement how much the person was loved and how much they’ll be missed.

has become an increasingly popular solution. Freezing the price while allowing the loved one to plan their day how they want it provides an intriguing alternative but is it all too good to be true? This article will endeavour to weigh up the pros and cons of pre-paid funeral plans to provide further perspective and help you with what will be a hard choice.

What is a pre-paid funeral plan?

Starting with general information about pre-paid plans. It’s a plan put in place to pay for your funeral when you die. This is often paid through monthly installments, though a flat fee is offered if you wish to pay in one lump sum. These plans are often discussed alongside life insurance policies; some (usually more expensive) policies do include funeral plans, though most just pay a lump sum. The discussion around which is better is a tough one and it usually depends on your own personal circumstances.

Pre-paid funeral plans have become more and more popular in recent years due to the attractive nature of getting your funeral ‘out of the way’ so you can focus on the future and the sharp increase in funeral cost over the last few decades. This article aims to provide the pros and cons of a pre-paid plan and make the decision a bit easier as well as alerting you to the potential pitfalls of the plan. Pre-paid plans are often seen as perfect solutions, this isn’t the case but they could be the perfect solution for you.

It freezes the cost of your funeral. This is probably the most appealing aspect of a funeral plan. Funeral costs are always on the rise with inflation and the price of a funeral has almost doubled in the space of only 10 years (Source : SunLife)

The plans offer multiple payment options over long periods often up to 10 years, allowing for easier payment and less panic over funds.

A funeral of someone dear will always be one of the most difficult days anyone can face so taking some of the pressure off and organising the funeral yourself is appealing.

When planning a funeral, there is always a feeling of ‘is this what they wanted?’. A pre-paid plan removes this feeling and allows you to plan the day how you want it.

Cons of a pre-paid funeral plan

The plan may not cover all costs. Most plans don’t include the additional items such as flowers and some don’t include the likes of a headstone. If they do include them, these are often more expensive.

The plan is put in place sometimes long before you actually need it. This is convenient as it freezes the price but it also means that sometimes the plan can fall through the cracks. Make sure that you alert family members to your plan and keep your information up to date if you happen to move house. Your plan can provide further piece of mind but it can also lead to future headaches so be aware.

A funeral plan means that the payout is limited to your funeral. It’s nice to cover a big expense but it also means that your family will not receive any money unless you also take up a life insurance policy. It’s always worth looking at what you want for your family and whether a funeral plan suits you.

A funeral plan means you have to face your morality. This can be a good thing in terms of acceptance but it can also be too much for some people, especially if you are advanced in age. It’s always best to talk about it with your family first so it’s not such a huge weight when you are discussing the funeral.

So there are just some of the prepaid funeral plans pros and cons. These plans are as personal as it gets and the good and bad will be largely affected by your circumstances. It is always best to not feel forced into something and have a good understanding of what you are getting involved with before talking about plans. We hope you found this useful and remember that at White Rose Funerals, we provide a personal service dedicated to you. If you need any support or guidance,
